Polymarket Fees: Trading Costs Explained

Understand maker and taker fees, market-specific fee settings, spreads and outside transfer charges before evaluating a trade.

The cost of a trade is not limited to a fee line. You may also pay the spread, experience slippage or incur charges from another service when moving funds. Polymarket fee settings can change, so this guide focuses on a repeatable cost review rather than a permanent universal rate.

Check the market’s current settings

Official fee documentation distinguishes makers from takers and describes market-specific fee categories. Do not apply an old zero-fee claim to every current market. Consult the current market information and order preview before estimating costs. If you are comparing strategies or testing historical ideas, record which fee assumptions you used and whether they matched the period represented by your data.

Model the trade you actually intend

An order label alone does not describe its economic behavior. Ask whether the order adds liquidity or executes against an existing quote, then review the applicable charges. Include the expected entry and the exit if your strategy depends on selling before resolution. A forecast can look attractive before execution costs and become unappealing after the costs of both sides are counted.

Separate fees from spread and slippage

Suppose a hypothetical position costs $100, incurs $1 in explicit charges and later sells for $104 with another $1 charge. The net gain is $2, not the $4 change in sale proceeds. If the execution price was worse than your original quote, that difference is an additional cost to explain. Label each component separately so a spreadsheet does not accidentally double-count or omit it.

Review transfers independently

Funding and withdrawing can involve a wallet, exchange, bridge or payment provider with its own pricing. Compare the expected amount received rather than focusing only on the platform’s own charge. For small positions, outside transfer costs can dominate the economics. Recheck the current route when moving between networks, and do not assume that a fee-free platform operation means every service involved is free.

Questions & answers

Are all Polymarket markets fee-free?

No. Consult the current official fee documentation and the settings for the specific market.

Can I lose money without an explicit trading fee?

Yes. An adverse outcome, a spread, slippage and outside transfer costs can all reduce your result.
